Description
Cover : This artwork looks like needlepoint or cross stitch. No artist signature. My best guess at the words on the sash is Americanus Sum, which probably comes from “Civis Americanus Sum” and means “I am an American Citizen.”
– FOURTH OF JULY NUMBER (much on 4th of July, Independence Day)
– Full page color ads for Hartford Tires (with lovely artwork, woman in maroon dress, navy driving coat, white scarf over her hat), Williams’ Talcum Powder (with art by Ostertag (probably Blanche).
– Cute half page Pabst Extract ad with art, “Infuse into those wan white cheeks the ruddy glow of Perfect Health.” You have to wonder if it is just alcohol.
– Full page black and white ads for Herreshoff (the smart, light cob of motor cars, Harry S. Haupt Company), Detroit Electric (Anderson Carriage Company, with photo of two women in a car, license plate 6087), Tribute to Life magazine from the Montpelier, Vermont Journal.
– Very funny quarter page artwork by Rea Irvin about lion tamer who cannot handle his wife.
– Full page art or cartoon art by F. T. Richards (June), William H. Walker (Time Obliterates : British man kissing American Woman at Bunker Hill), The wonderful Harrison Cady (A shutout, insects playing baseball)
– Two page centerspread art by William L. Jacobs, “A boy’s best friend,” boy hiding behind his mother as she defends him to his father who is holding a switch.
– Some current events include : Chancellor MacCracken and the five feet of books to be published by Colliers for any man; The Eliot library, Income tax.
– Any kind of tax is nasty. The least objectionable sort is a tax that taxes somebody else.”
– Half page photo of a large group of kids at Life’s Fresh Air Camps as ripe apples are being handed out to them.
– And much, much more (ads, artwork, commentary).
– And much more 1909 2Neat antique Life magazine content – cool!
