Historical Highlights from 1917 :
- First U.S. combat troops arrive in France as U.S. declares war on Germany.
- Dutch dancer Mata Hari is convicted and executed as a German spy.
- “I Want You.” Poster, featuring Uncle Sam, attracts thousands of U.S. recruits to WWI duty.
- Between ten and fifteen thousand blacks silently walk down New York City’s Fifth Avenue to protest racial discrimination and violence.
- The first Pulitzer Prizes are awarded.
- The United States ends its search for Pancho Villa.
- In an intercepted telegram, Germany offers to give Texas, Arizona, and New Mexico back to Mexico if Mexico declares war on the United States.
- The United States Senate adopts the cloture (or closure) rule in order to limit filibusters.
- The Selective Service Act passes, giving the president the power of conscription (the draft). Conscription begins June 5th.
- Night of Terror: The superintendent of the Occoquan Workhouse in Virginia orders the guards to brutalize the suffragist inmates.
