- Georgia introduces a law prohibiting alcohol, a precursor to Prohibition.
- Henry Ford develops the first Model T automobile, which sells for $850
- Thomas Selfridge becomes the first person to die in an airplane crash. The pilot, Orville Wright, is severely injured in the crash, but makes a recovery.
- Henri Matisse opens his own art academy in France.
- Robert Baden-Powell begins the Boy Scout movement.
- New York City passes the Sullivan Ordinance, making it illegal for women to smoke in public places. It is vetoed by Mayor George B. McClellan Jr.
- The first around-the-world car race, begins in New York City (lampooned by LIFE).
- A forty-sixth star is added to the United States flag representing the state of Oklahoma.
- American Messenger Company, predecessor of United Parcel Service, is founded in Washington (state).
