- Alice Sanger becomes the first female staffer in the White House.
- The United Mine Workers is founded.
- Journalist Nellie Bly completes her round-the-world journey in 72 days.
- Chicago is selected to host the Columbian Exposition.
- The US Census Bureau begins using Herman Hollerith’s tabulating machine to record census returns. Hollerith’s company eventually becomes IBM.
- The Sherman Antitrust Act becomes U.S. law.
- Idaho and Wyoming become states.
- Sequoia National Park and Yosemite National Park are created.
- Wounded Knee Massacre: 153 Lakota Sioux and 25 US cavalry troops are killed; about 150 flee the scene.
- The Demarest Building in NYC is the first with an electric elevator (installed by Otis).
