Historical Highlights from 1890 :

• Alice Sanger becomes the first female staffer in the White House.
• The United Mine Workers is founded.
• Journalist Nellie Bly completes her round-the-world journey in 72 days.
• Chicago is selected to host the Columbian Exposition.
• The US Census Bureau begins using Herman Hollerith’s tabulating machine to record census returns. Hollerith’s company eventually becomes IBM.
• The Sherman Antitrust Act becomes U.S. law.
• Idaho and Wyoming become states.
• Sequoia National Park and Yosemite National Park are created.
• Wounded Knee Massacre: 153 Lakota Sioux and 25 US cavalry troops are killed; about 150 flee the scene.
• The Demarest Building in NYC is the first with an electric elevator (installed by Otis).
