• Joe Frazier defeats Muhammad Ali in the first of three epic bouts. Frazier defends the World Heavyweight Championship in a star-studded Madison Square Garden.
• A United States first-class postage Stamp costs 8 cents.
• Sylmar earthquake hits the San Fernando Valley area of California, Mount Etna erupts , Tsunami in the Bay of Bengal in Orissa State in India kills 10,000.
• Idi Amin overthrows Ugandan President, Milton Obote.
• Intel releases world's first microprocessor, the 4004.
